The year ended with a lot of enthusiasm and passion where the members gave Family Whanau perspectives on regional and national documents that will be coming out in the New Year, such as the BluePrint II, Mental Health Act and others.
Midland believe it is important all voices are represented in these documents to ensure equity and acknowledgement to family and whanau needs.
The Midland MH&A team would like to thank the family whanau members for their hard work and support for our family and whanau within our communities.
11 August Strategic Planning Meeting at Novotel Hotel


On the 11 August we held at one day Strategic Planning Day at the Novotel Hotel in Rotorua. We had over 20 people attend this day with guest presenter Katherine Platz, Family Whanau Advisor from the Mental Health Commission who gave a presentation on the following:
Role of the MHC
- Purpose
- Core functions
MHC work program 2011-12
- Blueprint 2
- Monitoring and Advocacy
- Consumer and family networks
- What happens to MHC after June 2012?
Current Work Program
- National Indicators Report
- Prevention project
Manu of the participants gave positive feedback to the presentation and some even learnt a few new things about Blueprint and other area's within this presentation.

It was great seeing everyone again at our first meeting for 2011 in Rotorua. The thrive and energy seems to be bubbling in everyone and its awesome to see the motivation of this group bursting for the new year.
During the morning we separated into small groups and looked at our experiences dealing with a mixture of ethnic groups and what we believe their approaches would be from a cultural perspective when they come into our services.

Generating Action for Family Whanau Strategic Planning Days
DAY 1 - 13 July 2010
The Midland Generating Action for Family Whanau invited the wider sector to enrol in Day 1 of the strategic planning days which was themed "The Passionate Voice of Family Whanau" held at the Best Western Braeside in Rotorua. Co-faciltated by Sally Duncan, Frances Porter & Eseta Nonu-Reid they welcomed 35+ attendees who participated in the days events.

Katherine Platz - Mental Health Commission - National, Regional and Local Drivers for Family Advisors
Kathryn Platz was recently appointed as the National Family/Whanau Advisor at the Mental Health Commission. The role is to provide the family perspective and engage with the family network in the mental health and addiction sector. Kathryn has participated in the mental health and addiction sector for over a decade as both a support worker and also as a family member.
“I have journeyed with my partner and our children through mental health services on the search for well being as individuals and as a family group. The mental distress in my family of origin went unheard and unseen and lives were lost before their time. These current and past experiences drive my passion as an advocate for the for the family/whanau voice in respectful partnership with the consumer / tangata whaiora voice,” said Kathryn Platz.
Mental Health Commission Chair Dr Peter Mc George said that Kathryn’s networks and experience will add value to the work of the Commission.
“Kathryn comes to us with a tremendous kete of knowledge about the sector and the issues family and whanau face as they work with a family member who has a mental health or addiction issue. Sometimes the process can be very daunting and Kathryn’s input to our work programme is very important. We welcome her to the role.”
Currently Kathryn is working on developing family/whanau communication networks nationwide. “ Healing and integration of life experience happens best in healthy connection with others” she said.

Joanne Henare - Mid Central DHB - Whanau Dynamics and Wellbeing

Ngati Raukawa (Ngati Wehi Wehi/Ngati Tukorehe), Te Atiawa & Whare Kauri (Ngati Mutunga).
Joanne is a first generation ‘urban Maori’ a product of the 1950’s urban drift, born and bred in Mangere – South Auckland. She attended Hato Hohepa (St Joseph’s) Maori Girls College – a catholic Maori girls boarding college in Napier She holds a double degree in Psychology and Education to postgraduate level from the University of Auckland She has a strong background in mental health, social services, psychological services, community and volunteer work.
Specialising in “Dual Diagnosis” more commonly known as co-existing disorders working at Te Puna Oranga – a Kaupapa. Maori community based rehabilitation service in Papatoetoe. Working alongside adult men with severe and persistent mental health and problematic substance use.
She has worked at Te Roopu Whiriwhiri I te Rangatahi – The Wraparound Service a kaupapa Maori youth offending casemanagement service also in Papatoetoe. The Wraparound Service was piloted as a crime prevention initiative to address youth offending in the Mangere and Otara areas in 1998 and later expanded to include the greater South Auckland area. The Wraparound Service is based on a model of service that develops plans focusing on the individual strengths and needs of the young person and their whanau. Fundamental principles merge with the “never give up” philosophy that embodies an unconditional commitment to whanau development, whanau empowerment and outcome based interventions.
Joanne along with a small group of wahine (women) established Te Aho Tapu Trust – the first kaupapa Maori community based psychological service in Papatoetoe – South Auckland. She has held roles as a community worker, residential worker, keyworker, casemanager, team leader, clinical supervisor, cultural supervisor, service coordinator, trustee, administrator, trainer, mentor, advisor, facilitator, cleaner and volunteer.At the request of her father Joanne and her whanau returned to her tribal roots in the Horowhenua (Ngati Raukawa) in 2006.
To work for MidCentral Mental Health and Addiction Services as their first Family/Whanau Advisor and actively contribute to her tribal community and beyond. She is currently completing a postgraduate diploma in Whanau Development with Massey University.

Trish Lamb - Werry Centre - Working with Children and Adolescents

Trish is the Family/Whanau Advisor at the Werry Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Workforce Development and the Project Leader for the Family/Whanau Participation Project.
She has had 9 years experience working in a voluntary capacity on a consumer and family advisory group with the Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health Service, (CAF) Canterbury District Health Board and since last August has been employed by the CDHB in the position of Family Advisor for the CAF Service.
Trish originally registered as a mental health nurse and has since completed a BSc in Psychology and is at present studying towards a BA in Education and Human Services. She is a parent of a young person who has attended both CAF and adult mental health services.

Sue Rostron - Te Pou - Family Whanau Use of Information

Sue currently works as Information Lead-Service User with the Delivery team at Te Pou. In this role she promotes collaborative use of mental health information between clinicians and other MH staff, service users and family/ whanau.
Day 2 - 14 July 2010 Using information from Day 1
The Day 1 presentations provided the launch pad for the strategic planning day involving the MR GAFW membership. The day focused on reviewing progress against the Midland Strategic Plan and setting regional priority actions for the 2010/11 years.

MR GAFW reconvened on the 19th November 2009 with the development of Terms of Reference and a Strategic Vision that aligns with national and regional strategies for Family Inclusion. A comprehensive presentation was provided by Bice Awan, Mental Health Commission.
