Strategic Planning Day - 24 August

It was great to have the group back together representing our Midland Consumers and it was also awesome to see some new faces join the group from Progress to Health who had an input to the day.

Group one: With their thinking caps on                          Group two: Having robust discussions

Group three: Sharing their ideas

Last minute changes were made to the agenda due to facilitator travel however we were able to bring the group together to give feeback from a consumer's perspectives around the ADA act and also the Mental Health Service Development Plan.  We also looked at the current "vision logo" for Midland MH&A to redesign the look of the logo incorporating the Midland mission statement.  Keep posted as we hope to have a draft of everyone's ideas put into one.

  * Peter Burns & Vanessa Cooper - Consumer Advisor Roles and Draft Work Plan

Vanessa Cooper

Vanessa came to the Commission after working for the Mental Health Foundation on the Like Minds, Like Mine programme in the Auckland region, with a focus on developing greater understanding on how discrimination impedes recovery both within services and in the wider community. Previous to this Vanessa worked in the area of supported employment and community-based recovery. She has completed a Master's Degree in Health Sciences (mental health), focusing her research on employment discrimination and the factors that contribute to mentally healthy workplaces.

Vanessa is passionate about equity, social inclusion and human rights. Further, her interest is in how policy and research are implemented into practice and change in the real world. Vanessa advocates for greater consumer leadership, countering stereotypes, and holds the belief that access to quality information and education are the cornerstones to empowering anyone who may experience mental health challenges.

Paul Burns - AOD Consumer Advisor, Mental Health Commission

Prior to working for the Mental Health Commission, Paul has worked in the Mental Health, Disability and AOD sectors in a variety of roles, ranging from support work to Branch Management positions. Throughout all these roles Paul has been very active in AOD consumer networks and is currently on the Matua Raki AOD Leadership Group and is a member of the Aotearoa Alcohol and Other Drug Consumer Network. Paul is also currently a part time Trainer for Blueprint helping to facilitate the MH101 programme.

Paul is passionate about the AOD sector and especially from a Consumer perspective. This is due primarily to his own experience of the use and misuse of Alcohol and Other Drugs, his experience of receiving AOD services and the stigma that he has been the recipient of during his personal and ongoing journey of recovery.

Paul’s aim in life therefore, is to try and ensure that those whom seek help for addiction related matters are treated respectfully and in a positive, personalised and holistic manner, conducive to their own journey of addiction and/or recovery. Paul also believes that Consumer input into legislation, policy, treatment and planning of the AOD sector has historically and will in the future, always add value and maximise positive outcomes for those people seeking help. Paul respects an individual’s path to recovery, believing that no two people are the same and different models work for different folks.

  * Rhonda Robertson - Addiction Consumer Network & Matua Raki Developments

Rhonda has worked in the health a disability sector for over two decades, initially working in the area of intellectual disability. This marked the beginning of both a career and education pathway into the wider health and disability sector.

The involvement in consumer issues underpinned Rhonda’s decision to complete her BA majoring in Sociology and Political Science.

While continuing to be involved in consumer issues in a voluntary capacity, Rhonda was first appointed to a consumer role AOD Consumer Advisor in 2003, this which was a regional role and located in Christchurch. In 2005, Rhonda moved to Tauranga to take up the AOD Consumer Advisor at the Bay of Plenty DHB.
