Update from Jude Rickard from Te Kupenga Trust
The new stuff happening in our area is a separate consumer advisory group for our east coast whaiora, accessing local presenters. We were limited in the amount of whaiora we could fit in our little work car for the Gisborne consumer advisory group. S o its great to be able to make peer support available to more of our east coast whanau by holding them locally (research suggests a decrease in suicide and ideation where there is a peer support group)
Another new initiative is a fortnightly hour slot on Radio Ngati Porou speaking on mental health promotion. So far we have introduced all mental health and related services, other topics were mental health and the well elderly, and Te Matatini (kapa haka). Next weeks kaupapa is Psychosis and what it is like in the ward environment. There are usually three of us that attend the radio interview consisting of a nurse, cultural advisor and whaiora.
Another new initiative is Te Kupenga have developed a roster system to attend and advocate on the psychiatric inpatient ward on a daily basis.
