Lead Consumer Advisor
Mental Health & Addictions Services
Management Team
Bay Of Plenty District Health Board
Prior to the position that I hold now with the BOPDHB I worked for a Mental Health Charitable Trust for 3.5 years in a Financial and Systems Management role. It was whilst working at the Trust that I gained the National Certificate in Mental Health Support Work and Maori Mental Health Care Level 4. I also developed a passion for mental health and the clients that use services. I tell the clinicians at the DHB I have got no degrees in clinical care, but understand and empathise with the people we have the privilege of walking along side on their road to recovery. What a privilege it is indeed however the icing on the cake is what you learn in a day. I pride myself in never tarnishing someone by their history, or failures but to take each new day, learn from the past and try try try again.
I have a strong history in financial, personal assistant and organisation type roles however they all have encompassed a strong people focus as that has always been my passion.
I have a great sense of humor.
I am strong willed but accepting of other views Passion for culture and the diversity within that.
Personally I have a lovely partner and 2 wonderful children

My Father was born and raised in Tawapata, Mahia. My Mother was born in Glasgow and immigrated to New Zealand in the sixties. Accordingly, my Scottish heritage proclaims ‘S Rioghal Mo Dhream or Royal is my race. I am able to invoke this through being ‘clan Mac Gregor'.
I am, above all else, defined through the eyes of my Son as a Father. He is my only child and together we are our own little whanau.
As a worker, I am the Like Minds, Like Mine coordinator for Te Tairawhiti. Previously, I worked in the public service where I lead and managed teams in a call centre and processing environments.
However, it is my life experiences which have lead me to my current role. I have lived through challenging times and I now find myself looking at ways to be of service to others who are negotiating difficulties.

My journey with the consumer movement began after my first admission to the acute inpatient unit at Gisborne in 1987. It was known as a psychiatric survivor with a single advocate named Mary O Hagan. I received some wonderful information in the post on a regular basis that was both educational and empowering. (These handouts are still at the bottom of a very old glory box)
In 1997 I applied for and began employment for Ngati Porou Hauora as their mental health advocate. Shortly after that I attended my very first conference where a group of consumers met with Central Health Funding Authority to discuss setting up local consumer groups. Came up with a business plan, and so the birth of Te Kupenga began.
